A recent survey revealed that 83% of electrical contractors use smart technology as a part of their daily working life.

What is interesting is that of those surveyed, a quarter said that they would feel lost without their laptop, ipad or smartphone whilst going about their business. This highlights how much the electrical industry has changed to incorporate smart technology and found ways to include digital tech as part of daily electrical work.

However, smart technology isn’t just being used for convenience, the survey revealed that it is also being used to help contractors carry out work tasks. Two thirds of those in the survey revealed that they order products online, download technical specifications direct to their computers and look for technical advice via smart technology.

Although, those surveyed also admitted that they feel the biggest challenge is the rise in legislation and the problems that come with attempting to stay up to date.

Another problem was seen to be the rise in technical products, which has meant contractors have had to work much harder to keep up with new technology and have subsequently found that Apps have helped them to find quick product information in a hurry when necessary.

They also revealed that some of these apps detail information on how products can meet legislation guidelines.

This information is interesting and highlights that although things have been rapidly changing, contractors are trying to keep up with these changes despite the increased workload and difficulty in doing so. It also shows that contractors are making the most of smart technology and utilising the services and information available at their fingertips via the internet and Apps.

What’s your opinion of the increased use of smart and digital technology in the electrical industry?
