When PAT testing a computer there are some differences compared to testing non IT electrical equipment. As a reminder, we have put together a quick five step guide to help refresh your memory.

Computer IT PAT Testing1. You should first start your testing procedure with the computer power cord and begin by first performing a thorough visual inspection of the cord.

2. If the power cord passes the visual inspection and there are no cracks or damage, it is then time to continue on to the earth continuity followed by insulation at 500 volts DC.

3. Once all of these tests have been successfully completed and passed, the next thing to do is to test the computer with its own lead by starting with a detailed visual inspection.

4.Next should be the earth continuity at 100 or 200mA depending on manufacturer.  It is important to remember that computers can never be tested with a current higher than 200mA. If your tester is not capable of performing a 100 or 200mA test current, you cannot use it on IT equipment.

5. Once you have finished this, the insulation test at 500Volts DC should be performed, except if the computer is an older model as you may wish to use the leakage test in place of the standard insulation test.
