The IEE Code of Practice 3rd Edition lists five categories of portable appliance in the suggested frequency of testing table 7.1 on page 34: Hand Held, Portable, IT, Movable and Stationary. These categories have combinations of test and pass/fail limits specified in the text of the C of P.

By applying these test and limit combinations the tests used are as follows:

Hand Held and or Portable Class I Appliances Code 132.
Visual Test.
Earth Bond at 25 Amps with a limit of 0.1 Ohms
Insulation Test at 500 Volts DC with a limit of 1 MOhm
Load Leakage Test at Mains voltage with a limit of 0.75 mA.

IT Equipment Class I Code 136.
Visual Test.
Earth Bond at 200 mA with a limit of 0.1 Ohms.
Insulation test at 500 Volts DC with a limit of 1 MOhm

Movable and or Stationary Class I Code 133.
Visual test.
Earth Bond test at 25 Amps with a limit of 0.1 Ohms.
Insulation test at 500 Volts DC with a limit of 1 MOhm.
Load Leakage Test at Mains voltage with a limit of 3.5mA.

General Class II (Non IT) Code 232.
Visual Test.
Insulation Test at 500 Volts DC with a limit of 2 MOhm.
Touch Current Test at Mains voltage with a limit of 0.25 mA.

IT Class II Code 233.
Visual Test.
Insulation Test at 500 Volts DC with a limit of 2 MOhm.

For testing extension leads and IEC leads you use the ‘IEC Lead’ button in the manual test buttons under the display screen, remembering to select the ‘MEM’ button to save the test after the test is completed.
