How To PAT Test A Kettle

In testing a kettle you perform the following tests:

  1. Visual.
  2. Earth Bond.
  3. Insulation at 500 Volts DC.
  4. Leakage.

Most modern kettles are jug types but you will come across older kettles which have a detachable power cord. In the case of jug kettles you test the base and kettle as one unit. In the case of kettles with detachable power cords you test the power cord first and then the kettle with its own power cord. The power cord will be tested with a standard Lead Test comprising:

  1. Visual.
  2. Earth Continuity.
  3. Insulation at 500 Volts DC.
  4. Polarity.

You then test the kettle using the cord performing the test listed above remembering to clip the earth bond lead onto the metal casing of the kettle before commencing the Earth Bond test. You should also remember to cover the element with water to prevent damage to the element before commencing the Leakage test. In the case of jug kettles, if it has a metal casing follow the routine as above. If it has a plastic casing follow the routine as above but hold the earth bond lead onto the element inside the kettle, removing it once the Earth Bond test is completed.
